Roulette Records Mafia
The character of Maury Gold on HBO’s Vinyl is based on infamous Jewish organized crime figure and east coast Italian mafia associate Morris (The Octopus) Levy, the deceased owner of pioneering Roulette Records and a massive publishing-rights catalogue.
Among those seized in a dawn sweep were Morris Levy, president of New York City-based Roulette Records; Howard Fisher, Roulette’s controller, and Dominick Canterino, reputedly a leader in New. The character Hesh Rabkin may be a composite character inspired by music mogul Morris 'Mo' Levy, founder of Roulette Records, who had connections to the Mafia and owned a string of racehorses, Hy Weiss (an associate of Levy's) and Gaetano 'Corky' Vastola who was a member of the Mafia in New Jersey and worked with Roulette Records. A number of mafia figures were regular visitors to the Roulette building, including Gaetano “Corky” Vastola, a New Jersey gangster and one of the owners of the label. Tommy James also frequented the company’s office, observing enough to learn why Levy had a reputation for using strong-arm tactics. In his 2010 biography 'Me, the Mob, and the Music,' singer Tommy James wrote that Morris Levy, the Mafia-connected head of Roulette Records, had arranged the attack. All of Rodgers' most successful singles had been released by Roulette.
